Reviving and updating teaching trends through ‘Teacher Training’ program.

Great teachers create great students. A school is made by the teachers it keeps. A motivated, dedicated, empathetic and a knowledgeable teacher, who can inspire students into becoming positive thinkers, is the biggest asset a school can ever have and there can be no second opinion or a substitute to it.

Let me at the outset begin by reminding that Teachers are humans too, though they are always thought to be as super models, who need to know everything. They have their own positive points and short comings. A good teacher is always a good learner and a good learner only can be a good teacher. With education policies and practices being radically transformed Teacher education/ training is more important today than it was earlier.

The age old traditional teaching practices have been revamped especially in India. Along with being an expert in his/ her field a teacher needs to be a facilitator and a friend to her/ his students. More often than not a completely new teacher is assigned with a very challenging role in the school with little supervision and help. These teachers though well prepared are new to the environment and need a formal induction program to understand the school’s policies, vision and mission. We can deduce by the above that Teacher training is fundamentally divided into two parts.

  1. Teacher Induction program

This includes mentoring and coaching from veteran colleagues for the successful development of a new teacher. Great induction programs create opportunities for novice teachers to learn from best practices and analyze and reflect on their teaching.

  1. Ongoing teacher development programs.

It is critical for veteran teachers to have ongoing and regular opportunities to learn from each other.

Below are a few suggested training requirements. The school can add their own depending on their needs as they are the best judges of what the situation demands.

  • How To teach based on latest research on how children learn using innovative methods.
  • Using latest technology tools for better subject clarity.
  • Positive Classroom Management.
  • Understanding individual student needs,
  • How to give a negative feedback in a more positive and constructive way.
  • How to inspire and motivate students.
  • How to be happy and love your job.
  • Understanding new curriculum resources.
  • Moving beyond chalk and talk method of teaching
  • Peer Learning
  • Soft Skills Development
  • Leadership Skills
  • Role Plays
  • Assessment for learning
  • Effective Time Table
  • Stress Management
  • Written Assignments: Why and how
  • Time Management
  • Community Partnership

I would like to take this opportunity to add a word of caution. As stated above teacher training is a very important factor for the success of any school but over doing anything is not good. Only appropriate training sessions conducted by experts in the field is recommended. Too many of them could create a monotony and devalue a program that can otherwise have been a value addition.

Trupti Jadhav.
